Linguistic Attitudes towards Putonghua: the case of migrants from Hubei in Canton

Abstract


This paper describes the linguistic attitudes of migrants from Hubei working in Caton towards Putonghua, which is a language of mass communication, open to the outside world and adorned by all the prestige of modernity and power. This explicit judgement indicates both their linguistic taste and their social identity.
